Scotland
From DebConf7
Scotland is one of the countries which make up the United Kingdom.
- Population: 5 million
- Capital: Edinburgh
- Largest city: Glasgow
- Currency: pound sterling
Although it formed a political union with England in 1707, Scotland always retained its own legal system and education system. Power over certain matters is reserved to the UK-wide parliament in London, but power over all other matters is devolved to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Since the UK is a member of the European Union, Scotland is also represented in the European Parliament.
Bank of England money is valid in Scotland, but three Scottish banks -- the Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale Bank, and Royal Bank of Scotland -- also issue banknotes. These in turn are valid in England, though shopkeepers in provincial areas may not recognise them.
